"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the band?" a message pops up. "My request was to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

There is only a single issue: The sender also wants to be the Haims' additional sibling. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. Multiple high-profile fans have publicly petitioned for the honor.

The evidence suggests something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their career doing sets at small eateries with their parents. Today, they are multiple Grammy Award contenders.

Similar to the best groups, they're a inseparable unit. Their music videos often depict them striding in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such unfettered happiness you inevitably think, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a drum kit'," says Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the greatest compliment. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage others to make music."

"Therefore everyone are welcome to be the honorary member of Haim."

Grammy Nod

The group have called into home, where they're recovering after an major tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in the running for the award.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the nomination isn't lost on the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major step," adds Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the pioneers that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The album came out of a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that strange liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The words track endings and partings. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they want to be.

"I adore description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to make an effort in blocking the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That developed confidence called for a new sound – more organic and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the percussion.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Humor

The trio's candor inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their dating tales.

Someone left Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Path

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their position in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an international audience.

But the band will always be their primary focus.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was little," shares Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still going strong."
