The Fifth Toy Story Film Trailer Sets Woody and Buzz Versus a Tablet Computer
Exactly 30 years after the first Toy Story movie was released, launching the animation giant as a leading animation studio and bringing viewers to iconic characters like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and the space ranger (the voice talent), who are now household names.
Coming in 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed this week, offering a brief look into the storyline but leaving viewers wondering how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.
The Latest Addition: A Digital Device Frightens the Toys
The preview shows Bonnie — who inherited Andy's toys when he grew up — getting a brand new toy, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She gets her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.
Theoretically, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the toys appear to consider it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it probably is.
The Cowboy's Comeback: Mysteries from Toy Story 4
One thing the trailer avoids is what Woody is back with his friends in the child's bedroom. The end of Toy Story 4 depicted him embark on a new adventure with the shepherdess (the actress), traveling with a fair and helping giveaway items find good homes.
Surely, the filmmakers will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him show up in the familiar setting without warning is somewhat puzzling, though. It also raises questions whether Bo Peep will have returned with him. And where is the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?
Continuity from the Last Installment
Fortunately, some elements are carrying over from the prior film. The last thing the cowboy did before departing for his new life was pass his sheriff badge to the cowgirl (Joan Cusack), leaving her in charge of Bonnie's bedroom. The clip shows the insignia attached to her outfit.
Hopefully she is remains the driving force among the toys.
Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on June 19, 2026.
