Nigeria's remarkable new Museum of West African Art (Mowaa) has found itself in the crosshairs of local power politics during the period it was scheduled to – but did not manage – to welcome visitors to the public for the initial occasion.

The Ambitious Project

The large-scale complex sits in the heart of Benin City, main city of the southern area of Edo – and features an excavation site and structures planned by celebrated Ghanaian-British architect Sir David Adjaye, most famous for the National Museum of African American History and Culture that was inaugurated in Washington DC in 2016.

It has been half a decade in the creation – and is designed to honor both the past and the current era of creativity in the area renowned for the Benin Bronzes, artworks stolen from the king's palace by British troops in the nineteenth century.

Setup and Prospects

It is notable – and before the scheduled opening, Mowaa was active with workers determined to demonstrate it is a venue that can match well-known cultural centers in the Western world.

Inside art restorers meticulously revealed artworks from protective packaging, examining each artifact and taking meticulous documentation before placing them on display surfaces and stands.

Specialists adjusted temperature regulation systems. In the materials science laboratory, personnel set up instruments designed to maintain centuries-old objects.

Financial Backing and Economic Vision

The project has been the concept of businessman Phillip Ihenacho – presently Mowaa's executive director.

"I hope us to have a significant financial effect on area populations in the vicinity," he explained to journalists, mentioning that he wanted to make this urban center "an arts hub."

Mowaa, a non-profit local organization, envisions itself generating in excess of 30,000 direct and indirect jobs and contributing more than $80m annually to the regional creative economy through alliances and activities.

Financial Support and Government Issues

It has required $25m to reach this point – money gathered from multiple donors, featuring the European governments, the British Museum and the Edo state government.

But at present the local government has pulled the rug from beneath it – canceling the occupancy of the site on which the building was erected.

An Edo state spokesperson stated this was because in the original paperwork it had identified as Edo Museum of West African Art – and it had subsequently removed "the regional name" from its designation.

Unrest and Official Response

This declaration came after rallies on recently, when protesters invaded the facility demanding it be called the Museum of the Benin Kingdom.

A boisterous crowd insulted overseas dignitaries at the facility before the inauguration – compelling them to be escorted out under police escort.

National leader Bola Tinubu has additionally intervened to attempt to settle the conflict, creating a high-level committee to address the controversy.

Governance Issues

But in what way has this evolved into so divisive – and such a PR disaster?

A great deal of it results from internal conflicts at a local state level, as it was the ex-administrator Godwin Obaseki – whose administration concluded recently – who was a key supporter of the museum.

And it appears the government of the current leader, a close ally of the regional monarch, referred to as the Oba, may desire more of a stake in the initiative. The demonstrators on the weekend, for instance, were demanding that the facility be positioned under the supervision of the current Oba.

The Benin Bronzes Controversy

This highlights the disputed topic of the Benin Bronzes, one of the region's most celebrated artistic heritage.

Because though the institution does finally begin operations, these objects will be conspicuously absent.

They are metal, ivory and wooden sculptures that once decorated the monarch's home of the Benin Kingdom before UK forces took them in the late nineteenth century during a military operation.

Currently, numerous remain distributed across galleries in Western nations -- such as the UK institution, Berlin's Humboldt Forum and the New York institution.

Return Initiatives

Their return has become one of the most contested debates in the global art world. About 150 have presently been returned – and additional are due to follow.

When proposals for the institution in the urban center were first announced in 2019, the key players on the national arts community hoped it would become their natural home – a state-of-the-art campus to display them to the world.
