Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People buying these treatments must be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team point out that people who lose weight through dieting generally see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

Users who have discontinued the medication report a intense return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
