England and Wales Placed in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was overseen by rugby legends such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side together with their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in an identical pool for the World Cup in 2027, promising a highly-anticipated early clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This pairing mirrors their memorable meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the English team's surprise early exit.

Other Notable Group Pairings

The Irish alongside the Scots have likewise been drawn in a pool together, just as the situation from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, they claimed a convincing victory, with their opponents unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Portugal, both made a strong impression as underdogs in the last World Cup, complete that same group.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from defending champions and world number one South Africa until the showpiece match, presuming the Springboks win their assigned pool.

Tournament Ramifications

Should the pools play out in line with the current global standings, other top favourites like New Zealand and France would remain separated from the likes of the English and the Irish until the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on the same side of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Draw Major Fixture

Tournament hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their great rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will open the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match aimed at jump-start the competition.

In other groups, reigning champions the Springboks have been paired with the Azzurri, Georgia and Romania. France are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the twenty who competed in France.

The 2027 tournament will feature a last-16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup history.

Although the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the second-placed team from Pool B – probably the Italians – in the last 16.

A total of four of the other six pool winners will face a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
